Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
