Highlighted Choice

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the tyranny of female beauty as well as the feared consequences of ageing. The veteran actress offers a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, a mature actress demoted to starring in an aerobics show on television. Pushed out due to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and horrifying process titled the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful thriller features Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who takes some time off from reporting on international wars to join a luxury cruise accompanied by an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her partner, as well as other affluent guests. Yet once an unknown lady falls into the sea one night and the entire crew denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills with this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image in this meta comedy caper. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to attend a festive event in Mallorca for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the alleged criminal, his unconventional method proves useful. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong without requiring a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has rendered the children anxious. After Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to present Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

The current week's second offering from the filmmaker delivers a intelligence thriller as sharp as the polo necks worn by the actor's British agent. His assignment is to discover a double agent within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of understated style, leading to a delightful psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
